Take Inspiration from the Yorkshire Dales

Malham Cove & Ribblesdale – The Natural Wonders of the Yorkshire Dales (Moderate)

For sheer breathtaking beauty and inspiration, Yorkshire’s South Dales take some beating and this four night break offers the chance to experience its highlights. Described by Rambler’s Walking Holidays’ Ambassador Julia Bradbury (television presenter and former President of the Ramblers Association) as “a hub for both the adventurous and creative alike’, the area has stimulated artists, writers and composers alike. Tolkien is reputed to have based Helm’s Deep on the huge rock amphitheatre of Malham Cove, which also formed the backdrop for scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Even Turner and Elgar were inspired.Moulded by the ice age, the region’s rolling hills, moorland, deep eroded limestone pavements, high escarpments, waterfalls and wild valleys make it a top attraction on the Pennine Way. Taking in many natural highlights on the way to Settle, such as Catrigg Force waterfall and Malham Cove, the route taken on this holiday is punctuated with dramatic panoramic views stretching as far as the Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland and famous Pen Y Ghent ‘Hill of the Winds’

Malham Cove & Ribblesdale 4 night break starts from £399/person including half board at the newly refurbished Falcon Manor as well as local travel to and from the trailheads. Ramblers Walking Holidays, 01707 331 133, www.ramblersholidays.co.uk

Develop a new devotion to walking…

St Ignatius Way – ‘Camino’ through Basque Country (Moderate) – New for 2017

Walking along a well-trodden path to atonement takes more than a certain amount of dedication and even taking on part of one of these ‘caminos’ can be an incredibly uplifting and rewarding achievement. Following the pilgrimage of Ignatius, a great knight whose religious atonement saw him journey 340 miles from his birthplace to Montserrat in Catalonia, the St Ignatius Way takes in the first 70 miles of this lesser trodden Spanish ‘camino’ from the Holy sanctuary in Loiola, through spectacular areas of the Basque countryside, to the medieval walled town of Laguardia in the Rioja-Alavesa region. Merging history with legend, the trail traverses ancient mountain paths through the meditative limestone landscapes of Aizkorri-Aratz National Park, oak forests and serene meadows, before navigating the heady Biozkonia Pass (1200m) and crossing into the lush Cantabrian Mountains. Culminating in the vineyards of Rioja-Alavesa, uplifting walks are well rewarded throughout with hearty Basque cuisine and delicious local wine.

St Ignatius Way week long journey starts from £1275 including flights, half board accommodation, local guide and baggage transfers. Ramblers Walking Holidays, 01707 331 133, www.ramblersholidays.co.ukhttps://www.ramblersholidays.co.uk/st-ignatius-way

Take yourself to new heights…

Introduction to Hutting in the Stubai Alps (Challenging)

Like the idea of taking up the challenge of one of the world’s longer high altitude walks but never been quite sure about the prospect of staying in mountain huts? For a gentle acclimatisation, why not try an alpine taster in the Austrian Stubai Alps where nights high in mountains huts are combined with more indulgent four-star hotel accommodation on the valley floor. With dramatic views of snow clad peaks on the Italian borders including Zuckerhütl, Wilder Pfaff and Wilder Freiger, the week follows the Gloatsteig walk on a panoramic trail around the Marchreisen Spitz and the Rotspitzl col, visiting two of the Stubai Valley’s oldest huts in this less frequented part of the valley. “Walking yourself in”, 3 nights of the 7 are spent in these remote outposts, all above 2000m, offering the wonderful feeling of truly being in the wild.

7 nights holiday costs from £1020 with 4 nights half board, 3 nights full board, flights and baggage transportation. Ramblers Walking Holidays, 01707 331 133, www.ramblersholidays.co.uk
