Having launched in an auspicious year which saw the Queen marry the Duke of Edinburgh, India and Pakistan gain independence and the staging of the first Edinburgh Festival, Ramblers Walking Holidays’ first brochure ‘Holidays Abroad in 1947’ introduced post war holidaymakers to the esprit de corps of organised overseas walking holidays. Ranging from Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle, to Tunis and across the Mediterranean and incorporating a diverse range of activities from canoeing and alpine climbing to sightseeing, the programme stretched over 2,500 miles and visited eight countries.
Now covering more than 60 countries over tens of thousands of miles and with three additional sister brands – Chapters Experience Holidays, Adagio and Load Off Your Back, the company continues to be a popular choice with UK holidaymakers and keen walkers alike.
Kathy Cook, Joint Managing Director commented: “The essence, which has made Ramblers Walking Holidays a success for over 70 years, hasn’t changed. Our passion to discover a world of experience, both off and beyond the trodden path, at home and abroad, remains paramount in our quest to deliver holidays that are truly memorable and equally great for your health, heart and soul. Committed to innovation, with a sense of adventure, we will continue to go to great lengths to develop and enrich our programme with new countries, landscapes and hand-picked experiences, as we have always done, ensuring the best for our clients with holidays that suit all levels of fitness and experience.”
Offering an historic glimpse into post war holidays, Ramblers Walking Holidays first brochure featured 16 holidays, costing from as little as £16 5/- and covering 6 grades with durations ranging from 14 to 24 days. With most tours requiring “No special equipment … apart from stout walking boots and a rucksack”, holidays included transport on trains, coaches, local buses and boats, a variety of accommodation ranging from camping and youth hostels to the occasional stay in a hotel. Meals sometimes involved food being pooled for camping or, in some circumstances, comprised post war rations, whilst guidelines were included covering ‘discipline and esprit de corps’! Comradeship was also flagged as an important quality – and, much as today there was also emphasis on offering holidays which were considered extremely good value for money.
With over 250 different holidays to choose from across Ramblers Walking Holidays and its sister brands, they still feature versions of their most popular early tours. For example, ‘Hiking in Andorra’, formerly ‘Camping in the Republic of Andorra’, a 21-day tour for £16 5/- with the camping and pooled rations (now replaced by hotel accommodation and full board), remains as popular today as it was in 1947.
