In July 2017, the Lake District became one of the latest places to become a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, joining the likes of the Taj Mahal, the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon in the hall of international acclaim. Totally well deserved in our view, and this wonderful area has been the centre of many Ramblers Walking Holidays for years so why not get out there and explore them.

Ramblers Walking Holidays tour leader Ray Philpotts and over 80 keen walkers congregated at a Shropshire railway station on 4th July to walk the first completed section of the Heart of Wales Line Trail, a major new long-distance route which will run 140-miles between rural railway stations on the scenic Heart of Wales Line linking Shrewsbury to South Wales when it is completed.

ITV’s new drama series ‘Jericho’ brings to life the shanty town that grew up around the building of the Ribblehead viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1870s. The viaduct – 104 feet high, 440 yards long and with 24 soaring stone arches – is a massive engineering feat of the Victorian age, and cost hundreds of workers their lives during construction.

A undisputed 25 of its towns and villages have signed up to the ‘Walkers are Welcome’ scheme which aims to encourage walkers to be actively welcomed and assisted when visiting.
