In October 2010, I took my 12-year old son Oliver to Samos on our first Ramblers holiday. I’m a single parent and very much appreciated someone else doing all of the arrangement; in the past I had exhausted myself planning, driving, cooking etc, whilst trying to enjoy myself too.

Having sampled Crete, Patmos and Samos in previous years with Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, in 2008 we booked the Pelion and the Sporades holiday, only having to cancel it at the last moment due to my illness. February this year took us to Cuba with Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, and we were determined to complete our 2008 plans by booking the Greek holiday again this year for September 13th.

A first trip to Crete… and what a magical place. Chania is the perfect Mediterranean port. Where else would you walk around the harbour or an old town and actually think that EVERY restaurant deserved a visit; so friendly, and the ones we ate in served some of the best holiday food ever.

Excitement and anticipation of our holiday was tempered somewhat by the ongoing BA strikes but, due to the excellence of the Ramblers Worldwide Holidays organisational team, and some last minute arrangements by our leader, Hugh, all went well and our flight, bus journey and ferry connection were re-arranged with the minimum of fuss.

The Ramblers Worldwide Holidays group were a friendly mixture of like-minded people keen on the open air, walking and sightseeing. True to form there were those keen on bird watching and botany whose expertise was on hand to solve the identity; be it of bird or plant.
