What I will remember most about our holiday to La Palma are the volcanoes: walking through a strange landscape of black boulders, with hardly any vegetation, but an occasional tree contrasting with the stark backdrop. The going underfoot was sometimes hard, walking on small uneven pebbles and boulders, and occasionally fun as we were almost sliding downhill on thick sand.

This is a new area of France for me and for many of our group. Kaysersberg, our base, is a lovely small town in the Weiss valley – it has steep slopes covered with vines. For centuries, it has exported its wines across the nearby Rhine to Germany.

Being an occasional skier where better for me to go than the Three Valleys? Start of the day- why do my boots feel as though they are squashing my ankles? Day 1 -2 – Skis, 2 poles, crash helmet; I must have forgotten something!
